From 1981 The Clash of the Titans with Harry Hamlin in the lead role.Poor quality film is the least of it's problems...lol. Clash of the Titans 2010
will be the one remember. 1981 version should only appear on Mystery Science Theater 3000.Don't know if that show is still on or not.Found web site
for it though.
Basically,Ano,you are not missing anything for not have seen or heard of the original..lol. The original is always good for a laugh--the claymation
and puppets...wow.

Just curious,is the kraken in this film the same kraken that was in the Pirates of the Caribbean? I know the CGI versions are different, but just
wondered if it was the same idea.

Well, just returned from the battle with the Greek God's. It's been awhile since I've seen the old movie and from my knowledge it appears the remake
didn't stray too far from the original with just a few exceptions.
There are not as many fight scenes as the original (no army of skeleton's to battle). Obviously, the special effects were way better considering all
they had to do was out-do stop-animation from figurines.
I am not going to go into all the details and possibly spoil it for others.
The only two negatives I have are:
1) I think the final battle with the Kraken was way too short. They spent a great deal of time building toward it, so you got to let that fight scene
breathe a little life.
2) I watched it in 3D but not on i-max and don't think the 3-D brought anything new to the viewing experience. I can't remember one single time where
I "ohhh'd" over a 3-D effect. I think they make some movies specifically for the 3-D effect and others are re-edited to fit the format. I believe
this was the former and unfortunately it didn't appear to add all that to my viewing pleasure.
Overall, I think this a must see movie, maybe not a rush to see right now though. I think it would perfectly OK to wait for the DVD release or cable
play.
On a scale between "Rotten Tomatoes" and "OMFG Must See", I'd give it a "not bad/not great" rating.

so i went out and bought it on blu-ray.
Liam Neeson is the only Zeus i'll recognize from now on.
the guy who played Perseus was pretty good, too.
and who was that woman that played Io? oh my goodness.
as for the movie... while a great visual spectacle, it kinda felt rushed in parts. well... not parts. most of it. it was an hour and 45 minutes long
(or somewhere like that). with so much goings on, they could've easily pushed it to 3 hours and fleshed out the scenes more. not just with The Kraken
scene, like G said... i felt the Medusa bit was hurried. the Calibos parts were hurried. the Djinn parts were hurried. the Stygian Witches part was
hurried.
the supporting cast came and went very quickly.
oh, he's in the ocean?
so he's in Argos now?
so that's Stygia, eh?
ooh, the underworld.
back in Argos already?
it didn't seem like anything was allowed to develop very much.
having said all that... what you get with this movie is everything a movie about the Ancient world should be.
don't get me wrong... Troy and Gladiator and 300, etc are all great movies. but where are the beasts and the gods? THOSE are the bits that make those
stories really interesting.
Clash of the Titans had those. all manner of them. hopefully Hollywood follows suit (though, hopefully they give more screen time) and gets into this
kind of stuff when they start making movies.
show me Isis or Loki or Hades raising some hell.
give me monsters and magic.
in this new era of "goddang, did you see that?" special effects, put all that crazy isht on screen and lets see what happens.
Clash of the Titans did that, and did it marvelously.
Zeus's armor, for example, was exactly what you'd expect the king of the gods' armor to look like. blindingly shiny, like it's its own light source.
the Djinn looked fantastic. the effects for Hades were great. the Kraken (though all-too-limited on screen time) looked like it could actually destroy
worlds.
the movie had all the pieces of a truly epic film. not the epic that today's interweb kids throws around... the actual "epic". the only problem with
it is it's over way too quick.
seriously... if the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King taught us anything, it's that people WILL sit through 4 hour movies provided all sorts
of badassery goes on.
