| Patriots make offer to RB Faulk | |
Faulk gained 335 yards on 62 carries last season and caught 37 passes for 301 yards. He was one of quarterback Tom Brady's(notes) favorite targets to get the ball to on third downs. And it doesn't appear that Faulk wants to go anywhere else. According to the Herald, talks had been "moving along" up until Friday when the free-agency window got thrown open. Things will likely start rolling again soon.
|
| Rams DEs visiting Saints | |
Hall has been in the league for a decade and had 42 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season. It's not likely that he'll return to his 2004 form when he had 11.5 sacks. Meanwhile, Little had 6.5 sacks last year, one interception and 23 tackles.
|
| Rhodes not happy with Jets | |
Rhodes didn't exactly get along with Jets defensive coaches Mike Pettine and Dennis Thurman last year. Plus, he says the Jets basically slapped him in the face when they took him out of a leadership role so that players that worked with coach Rex Ryan when they were all with the Baltimore Ravens -- Bart Scott(notes), Jim Leonhard(notes) and Marques Douglas(notes) - could take over that role. Rhodes wouldn't say whether the trade made him mad or sad, but it seems pretty clear what his feelings are about the Jets in general. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum apparently told Rhodes he was the only player he could trade to get draft picks, which Rhodes wasn't buying. "I still take that as an excuse," Rhodes told the Post. "You can get picks for anybody. You can get picks for Mark Sanchez(notes) if you want them, but he's still there." Enjoy Arizona, Kerry.
|
| Titans signing LB Witherspoon | |
But it looks like the 29-year-old will be moving on to his third team in two years, the Tennessee Titans, according to ProFootballTalk. The Eagles released Witherspoon on March 5 and now it looks like he'll be signing a three-year deal with the Titans unless something goes horribly awry at the last minute. This should make the return of 32-year-old linebacker Keith Bulluck(notes) to Tennessee pretty much a non-issue. Bulluck had 108 tackles and three interceptions for the Titans last year.
|
| Dolphins interested in Dez Bryant | |
The Miami Herald is reporting, however, that the Miami Dolphins may take him in the upcoming draft. The team supposedly wants to find some targets for quarterback Chad Henne(notes) to hit now that it has improved its defense with the signing of Karlos Dansby(notes). Of course, this could only happen if the man who pulled in 17 receptions, four touchdowns and gained 323 yards last year is still left when Miami picks at No. 12. The word is that the Denver Broncos could take him just before that.
|
| Cornerback Bodden re-signing with Patriots? | |
But his rep, Alvin Keels, is saying via Twitter that Bodden hasn't signed anything yet even though he's always desired a return to the Pats. "Reports of Leigh Bodden re-signing with the Patriots are not true and premature at best," Keels tweeted. The Houston Texans apparently would like to have Bodden in their uniform and he visited the team earlier this week. Still, the general belief is that he is close to signing a new contact with New England. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. |
| Bengals working out WRs T.O, Bryant | |
Of course the 29-year-old Bryant is much younger than T.O., but he'd likely take more money to sign. Plus, Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco(notes) is supposedly involved in the decision-making process and he would probably pull the lever for Owens in this situation. And when Ochocinco pulls a lever in Cincinnati, things happen.
|
| Vikings after LaDainian Tomlinson? | |
Tomlinson, who tearfully got released from the San Diego Chargers last week after playing there since he was drafted in 2001, would apparently be more of interest to the Vikes than former Philadelphia Eagles running back (and fellow free agent) Brian Westbrook(notes). The Oakland Raiders also might be interested in signing the 30-year-old Tomlinson, who had 12 touchdowns last year on 223 carries for 730 yards.
|
| Tebow working out for Seahawks, Bills | |
Tebow will work out for everybody to see on Pro Day on March 17, but some folks would like a closer look. The Bills could go into next year with Trent Edwards(notes) as the starter, but the team has apparently asked Tebow for a private workout, according to the Buffalo News. Tebow has apparently changed his throwing motion since the last time teams saw him in order to shorten his delivery, according to the Seattle Times. It would be nice for Tebow if he ended up in Seattle where he wouldn't have to be the starter right away. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. |
| Bengals, Seahawks after Broncos' Brandon Marshall? | |
ESPN reports that the Bengals are talking about getting Marshall (perhaps for its No. 21 pick) but he has no visit scheduled with Cincy. The Cincinnati Enquirer seems to think it's not going to happen and the whole thing is a charade meant to drive up the price for other suitors, such as the Seattle Seahawks, who met with Marshall over the weekend. The Olympian has it that two of the folks involved in Seahawks' talks with Marshall were guys he knew back in Denver: offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates and quarterbacks coach Jedd Fisch. Any team that signs Marshall has to give up a first-round pick to the Broncos if they don't match the offer. Seattle has the sixth overall pick.
|
| Falcons trading cornerback to Lions | |
It is reporting that the Lions are getting close to trading for Atlanta Falcons cornerback Chris Houston(notes) and it should be completed Monday. The Falcons will apparently get a sixth-round pick and the Lions and Falcons will exchange positions in the fifth round of this year's draft. Houston was drafted in 2007. The 25-year-old Texas native had 47 tackles last year and one interception.
|
| Four teams after Antrel Rolle | |
The Dolphins supposedly offered a five-year deal for less money than the Giants. Rolle, who had 72 tackles and four interceptions last season, reportedly said no to an ofer from the Cards that was worth $32.6 million over six seasons. Rolle, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2005 draft, supposedly wants to make $8 million annually. Join the club, buddy.
|
| Jets have interest in keeping Thomas Jones | |
Earlier this week, the Jets very publicly told the world that the team would release him Friday so that he wouldn't collect the $3 million roster bonus that would be due to him if he stayed onboard. Now the word is that the team is considering re-signing him. It is only thought to be a remote chance that this will ever happen but it is surprising that it is even a possibility.
|
| Colts and Brackett negotiate into night | |
They had gotten pretty far along, it seems, because one source said a deal could end up being announced Friday. At the same time, the Colts made their feelings for defensive lineman Raheem Brock(notes) known to him by not bothering to try and re-sign him to a deal. Colts prez Bill Polian supposedly met with Brock Thursday afternoon.
|
| RB Taylor visiting Bears | |
That said, the Vikes apparently would like Taylor to hurry up and make up his mind on where he wants to be next season so that Minnesota can either get his contract squared away or get going on trying to sign other free agents. If Taylor ends up in Chicago, it seems likely that he could end up taking Matt Forte's(notes) starting job.
|
| Peppers signing with Redskins? | |
The 'Skins and Peppers are supposedly close to a deal. However, the validity of this all is unclear since Peppers' agent says the Chicago Bears were the first to call his client and offered a pretty good deal, too, according to the Washington Post. Peppers is set to visit with Chicago Friday. If the Redskins can't get Peppers signed, the team will apparently go after former Arizona Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby(notes). Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. |
| Dolphins frontrunners for LB Dansby? | |
The 28-year-old had 109 tackles last season, one sack, one forced fumble and one interception. And he's apparently got some interest from the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons, though the Sun-Sentinel predicts the Dolphins to be the favorites to sign him. The Falcons are said to be have former Houston Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson(notes) higher on their list of priorities so that may cancel Dansby's chances in Georgia.
|
| Chargers' Sproles now on trading block | |
The team surprised the NFL world by placing a first-and-third tender on him, meaning it'll have to pay him $7,283,000 next season, have the right to match any offer another team makes, or be given a first- and third-round draft pick as compensation by any team that signs him. The Union-Tribune seems to think the Chargers are prepared to go another route with Sproles, though: trading him. And the paper reports it won't take a first- and third-round draft pick to get him via trade. When he was about to become an unrestricted free agent, the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins and St. Louis Rams were all places Sproles supposedly was going to visit with.
|
| Redskins bitter about being tendered offers | |
A few Washington Redskins in that group are pretty unhappy about it, according to the Washington Post. "I hate it, man," cornerback Carlos Rogers(notes) told the paper. "That's all I'm going to say. I really don't want to say too much right now. But I don't like it. They know they got me for cheap." Redskins linebacker Rocky McIntosh(notes) seems to feel the same way. "You talk about it and you just try to deal with it. But some guys are like, 'Man, this is tough to have it happen this year,'" McIntosh told the paper.
|
| Bears not shopping TE Olsen | |
Now the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that the team isn't actively shopping Olsen but is certainly listening to offers just as it would for any player. Olsen led the Bears with 60 catches and eight touchdowns last season. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. |
| Cardinals want third-round pick for Boldin | |
Sure, he's 30 and would likely want to renegotiate the current deal he has that will pay $12 million over the next two years, but Boldin pulled in 84 receptions last year for 1,024 yards and four touchdowns. Boldin has been trying to get himself traded out of Arizona since 2007. You have to wonder if he'll just be happy to be somewhere else or if he's so used to complaining that he'll just start up with his new team if he's traded.
|
| Dolphins QB Henne feeling confident | |
"I know they have confidence in me and have high expectations of me. I have high expectations of myself. Whatever they do, I think they still have confidence in me," he told the paper. Pennington apparently still wants to be a starter. "If he comes back, I definitely welcome him back because he's taught me so much, and I think if he does come back, it'll only help me out,'' Henne told the Herald. "I think I'd be up for the competition."
|
| Vick wants to play for Panthers | |
If that trade does happen, Vick would apparently like to go to the Carolina Panthers, according to the Charlotte Observer. Why? As he said, "Well, you know, it's close to home. I like the uniforms. You get to play against Atlanta twice a year. Ain't nothing better than playing against your former team, right? So, yeah, that would be a good look, it would be a good look." Vick grew up in Newport News, Va., and, of course, once was a dominating force in the league with the Atlanta Falcons. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. |
| Rams discussing Eagles' McNabb? | |
McNabb has one year left on his contract and there is some belief that the Eagles will trade at least one of three quarterbacks - McNabb, Michael Vick(notes) and Kevin Kolb(notes) - since they all become free agents after next season. The Rams haven't supposedly talked to the Eagles about what it would take to acquire McNabb just yet.
|
| Bears bringing in Julius Peppers? | |
Teams aren't supposed to talk to reps just yet about free agents so if this is true, there could be a tampering charge involved. Unless the two sides didn't actually discuss Peppers when they met last weekend except in extremely roundabout terms, such as "Could you pass the Peppers?" The 6'7", 283-pound Peppers is likely going to be the most expensive free agent signing this offseason. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. |
| Chargers' Cromartie not going to Detroit? | |
The San Diego apparently asked for backup running back Maurice Morris(notes) in return and the Lions didn't want to part with the 30-year-old, who rushed for 384 yards and two touchdowns last year. It is hard to believe that this was enough of a sticking point to end this little Cromartie party so there are some who think talks are still ongoing between the teams. Morris' best game last season came against the Arizona Cardinals when he ran for 126 yards and a touchdown.
|
| NFL scouts concerned about Dez Bryant's behavior | |
"I wouldn't draft that kid unless I had someone to wake him up in the morning to get to meetings, someone to wake him up for practice and someone to wake him up for games," one source told Cole. Meanwhile, somebody else told Cole that Bryant was even late for games sometimes. There's no way to know if teams are just spreading bad info in hopes of having Bryant's draft spot slide downward, Cole points out. But the expectation is still that he'll get picked in the top 15.
|
| Chargers moving Cromartie to Lions? | |
The 25-year-old had three interceptions and 33 tackles last season. The Chargers have supposedly wanted a running back in return, but it isn't known if the Lions have a quality one to give them. If not, the Lions are probably giving up a second-round pick for Cromartie.
|
| Terrell Owens moving to Baltimore? | |
Owens caught 55 passes for 829 yards and five touchdowns for the Bills last year so somebody would likely want him. And according to Yahoo! Sports' Doug Farrar, that somebody may be the Baltimore Ravens. Coach John Harbaugh apparently has a lot of respect for Owens and had recently been watching tape of T.O. to see how he'd look with the Ravens. He also apparently ran into Owens in a Burger King in Iraq last summer -- no kidding -- and you can be sure they didn't talk about how the burgers were.
|
| Redskins sending QB Campbell to Buffalo? | |
The Redskins are supposedly thinking of drafting Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen or Oklahoma's Sam Bradford if he hasn't been snapped up earlier. Of course, the Redskins could want to keep Campbell around for just one more season while whomever they draft gets some seasoning.
|
| Bears interested in Julius Peppers | |
That's the word floating around the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis this week. The Bears clearly would love to have Peppers and the 81 sacks he's had the last eight seasons. But it remains to be seen if the Bears can handle paying out the $15 million per season it might take to get Peppers.
|
| Steelers trying to extend free safety Clark | |
Now that the team has nose tackle Casey Hampton(notes) signed to a three-year, $21.3 million deal and have franchised kicker Jeff Reed(notes), the attention is now on getting Clark under contract, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. For those of you hoping the deal doesn't get done so your team can sign one of the league's top free safeties, don't bother. The 30-year-old Clark doesn't appear to want to test free agency and is apparently offering himself at a discount of sorts to the Steelers.
|
| Are Saints interested in LaDainian Tomlinson? | |
Bell played less and less as the season went on last year so it doesn't appear that the team will try to sign him. Quarterback Drew Brees(notes) has said that he would love to have his former San Diego Chargers teammate Tomlinson on the Saints and the team may be following his lead. "Crazier things have happened," Brees said. Taking a page from Emily Post, Brees also went out of his way not to insult the current running backs in case nothing changed. If nothing else, the Saints are sure to check out the idea of signing Tomlinson.
|
| Rams may pick Bradford No. 1 | |
ESPN's Adam Schefter said as much to a St. Louis radio station but also said he hadn't actually spoken to the Rams about it. If nothing else, Bradford will go in the top five. The Rams will likely lean toward taking an offensive player with that first pick since the team apparently doesn't like the idea of shelling out so much dough for a defensive player. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions are expected to take either University of Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh or Oklahoma defensive lineman Gerald McCoy at No. 2.
|
| Wilfork and Patriots close to a deal | |
And that info is coming from a pretty good source: Patriots owner Robert Kraft. He says the sides are "very close." "We have a budget we've set for next year. Our first priority is with Vince," Kraft told the Herald. "I think we've had some positive discussions. We're very close. I hope we can conclude it soon."
|
| Steelers and Hampton closing in on long-term deal | |
The rumor Wednesday was the Steelers were going to do just that if they couldn't work out a long-term deal by the franchise-tag deadline Thursday. And Hampton supposedly was not the slightest bit happy about it. Well, according to NFL.com, five-time Pro Bowler Hampton and the Steelers are getting close to signing a long-term deal that could keep them together for a while. If the deal doesn't get done, the 32-year-old will make about $7 million this season as the team's franchise player.
|
| Broncos RB Moreno throwing punches in bar brawl? | |
An 18-year-old University of Georgia freshman says Moreno took a swipe at him during a bar brawl last weekend, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The kid was drunk so his memory may be a little fuzzy, but he claims that three guys "jumped" him on Saturday and his friends told him later Moreno was one of them. Moreno, who rushed for 947 yards for the Broncos last year and scored seven touchdowns, is saying he was punched first before he got involved.
|
| Steelers could hang franchise tag on NT Hampton | |
The Steelers and Hampton's reps are supposedly trying to work out a long-term deal before Thursday's deadline, but if that can't happen, the team will likely franchise Hampton in order to keep the five-time Pro Bowler around for another year. The designation would earn the 32-year-old about $7 million next year. The hope would be to then sign him to a long-term deal. Pittsburgh took a similar route last year when it franchised left tackle Max Starks(notes) and then inked a four-year, $26.3 million contract.
|
| Two-game suspension coming for Chargers' Jackson? | |
The 27-year-old will also be on probation for five years and has to pay a $2,408 fine, small potatoes for a guy who is making more than a half million dollars this year. It also is looking likely that he will get a suspension from the NFL, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The suspension is expected to be around two games, which will cost him a lot more dough than the fine. Still, it could have been worse. The prosecutors wanted to give him 180 days in the slammer but it seems he's avoided that.
|
| Chargers could be losing Sproles | |
The team is supposedly committed to not signing Sproles for one year. Since he was the team's franchise player last year, they've got to give him a 10 percent raise if they keep him this season, which would bring the 26-year-old a salary of about $7.3 million for the coming season. You can be sure some team is going to want a guy who scored three touchdowns last year and gained 343 yards.
|
| Packers franchising nose tackle Pickett | |
The two sides are apparently still trying to work out a long-term deal but if that can't be done, Pickett, who had 33 tackles last year, will be the man with the franchise tag around his neck this season in Green Bay. That'll earn him about $7 million for a season's work. Not bad for a 30-year-old father of three.
|
| Raiders shopping whole roster? | |
Of course finding someone to take Asomugha will be extremely difficult since Davis signed him to a deal last February that has him making the second part of $28.5 million this season and then get a one-year deal of $16.875 million or the average of the salary of the top five quarterbacks in the league, whichever is higher. Guess Al Davis finally did the math on that one and figured it wasn't worth it. The trouble for Davis is that nobody else wants to pay that, either, to a guy who had 34 tackles last year and one interception.
|
| Panthers letting Peppers fly free? | |
The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles supposedly have interest in signing Peppers, who is sure to generate lots of interest and talk this offseason. And why not? When you have 42 tackles, 10.5 sacks, force five fumbles, and bring down two interceptions, who wouldn't want you? There is some belief that Peppers will find out from the team Tuesday what the final decision is, but there are others that think the team hasn't firmly made up its mind just yet.
|
| Saints not franchising Sharper | |
The team has decide by Thursday. The Saints are likely looking at Usama Young(notes) and 2009 first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins(notes) to see if they think either one of them can take over where Sharper left off. Surely the team isn't expecting the nine interceptions and 71 tackles it got from Sharper last season from either of these fellows, but maybe it would get half the job for a lot less dough.
|
| Packers safety Collins planning to hold out | |
That is, he'll do it if the team doesn't come through with some kind of long-term deal and just extends him a restricted free agent tender. The 26-year-old two-time Pro Bowler has had 13 interceptions over the last two years and 44 tackles last year with nine assists. Guess he wants to start saving some bucks for his three kids' college funds.
|
| Brackett wants to stay with Colts | |
Plenty of other teams would like to have the 29-year-old on their rosters. After all, he had 80 solo tackles last year and assisted in 19. The Colts would love to have him back and the sides have apparently been discussing the possibility.
|
| Cardinals releasing Rolle? | |
The Cardinals are apparently thinking the team can re-sign Rolle without shelling out all that dough since he supposedly would really like to stay in Arizona. However, the 27-year-old who can do a back flip calls Miami home so there is some suspicious that the Miami Dolphins could be interested if Rolle gets put on the open market, especially since Miami isn't fond of the safety it has right now, Gibril Wilson(notes). And the New York Giants may be interested in Rolle as well. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill. |
| Titans' Mawae testing free agency? | |
The 39-year-old's agent seems to think the team won't be extending a contract offer before free agency kicks off on March 5. "All things being equal, he'd love to be back," the agent, Mark Bartelstein, said. "I think the Titans have a young guy there they are trying to bring along, and they just made a big investment in (guard Eugene) Amano. So I am not sure that the role Kevin would have as a Titan is worthy of what Kevin is as a player right now." Amano is 27 years old and just signed to a five-year deal. And it's looking the team wants 25-year-old offensive lineman Leroy Harris(notes), who has been in the league four years, to take over at center. You can be sure sixteen-year vet Mawae is offended.
|
| Patriots want Panthers' Peppers? | |
And the site reports that the idea of Peppers becoming a free agent has pricked up the ears of everybody in the New England Patriots organization. The Panthers and Pats supposedly talked about a Peppers trade last offseason. The challenge the Patriots face is finding enough cash to re-sign nose tackle Vince Wilfork(notes) and quarterback Tom Brady(notes) as well as for Peppers. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants also are apparently interested in bringing in Peppers as well.
|
| No Michael Vick trade till preseason | |
The idea is that Vick will be a much stronger trading piece by that point after he's had an offseason to get himself ready and look full of potential rather than looking like the guy who just finished the season as pretty much a non-entity for the Birds. Plenty of teams have called the Eagles to ask about Vick's availability so there is clearly a market there but the Eagles supposedly haven't started any conversations with any teams to explore a Vick trade. That certainly would have happened by now if the team wanted to trade him by the first week in March.
|
| Chargers CB Cromartie could be traded | |
It's being reported that the team is "exploring possible trade scenarios" that would send Cromartie packing in exchange for a running back. One of the scenarios that was rumored to be happening was Cromartie being sent to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for running back Tashard Choice(notes) but it appears that Dallas isn't interested in that at this point. ESPN suggests that the Green Bay Packers could use a cornerback and would likely use a draft pick to trade rather than a player. Cromartie had three interceptions and 33 tackles last season for the Chargers, the only team he's played for since being drafted 19th overall in the 2006 draft. Moving elsewhere may also help Cromartie find new friends to have children with as well. He currently has seven spread over five states and has had a number of paternity suits filed against him in recent years.
|
| Bengals sign Jones despite lousy workout | |
Receiver Matt Jones(notes) will apparently make $700,00 this year from the Bengals for his services, but the word from Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole is that Jones had a lousy workout for the Bengals and some folks can't quite figure out how the guy got signed. "It was one of the worst workouts I have ever seen," one of Cole's sources told him. "I don't care how fast his 40 time is or was, he's a slow-twitch athlete." Of course Jones may be on the payroll but that doesn't mean he'll be on the roster when real games get started next season.
|
| 49ers franchising DT Franklin? | |
If the team can't come up with a multiyear deal by the Feb. 25 franchise-tag deadline, it appears that the 29-year-old Franklin will get the tag, which will bring him a $7 million price tag for the season as well. "I'd like to be back here, but me and my agent are going to sit down and talk and look at the possibilities of the franchise tag,'' Franklin said at the end of the season.
|
| Saints franchising safety Sharper | |
After all, the 34-year-old is the active league leader in interceptions. It looks like New Orleans would like to have just one more year of his services before cutting him loose, though it is possible that the team could try and sign him to a two- or three-year deal in order to have him finish out his career in the Big Easy. If Sharper gets the franchise tag, the team will owe him around $6.5 million. Not bad.
|
| Dolphins not going after Chargers' WR? | |
The Dolphins had been thought to be interested in making an offer to Jackson but apparently the team is going to continue loving him from afar for now since it is likely the Chargers would match any offer the Dolphins made. And if the Chargers didn't match the offer, the Dolphins apparently aren't ready to give up the first- and third-round picks it would likely have to give as compensation for signing the restricted free agent.
