"Strong possibility" Jets adding WR Coles
Fri, 30 Jul 2010 04:30:27 PDT

Laveranues ColesFree-agent wide receiver Laveranues Coles(notes) is without a team since the Cincinnati Bengals sent him packing after a season in which he had 43 receptions for 514 yards and five touchdowns.

The New York Post is reporting that "there is a strong possibility he will re-sign with the team that drafted him in 2000," the New York Jets.

The Jets will have Coles in for a workout Friday, the paper reports. If the 32-year-old looks healthy, he may get another shot in the Big Apple, especially since new addition Santonio Holmes(notes) has to sit out the first four games of the season due to a suspension.

If Coles is signed, it would indicate that the team lacks confidence in Brad Smith(notes) and David Clowney(notes) as dependable No. 3 receivers, the Post reports.

In his decade in the NFL, Coles has 674 catches for 8,609 yards and 49 touchdowns.

Ravens rookie LB Kindle narcoleptic
Thu, 29 Jul 2010 03:40:02 PDT
Sergio KindleBaltimore Ravens rookie linebacker Sergio Kindle(notes) recently fell down two flights of stairs late one night in Austin, Texas, and fractured his skull. His former coach at the University of Texas, Mack Brown, says that Kindle has narcolepsy and that might have contributed to the fall, according to OrangeBloods.com.

The National Football Post reported that Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome and director of college scouting Eric DeCosta "seemed amused when asked about the reports that Kindle takes medication for narcolepsy and ADD."

"If it was a concern, we probably wouldn't have drafted him," DeCosta said.

Titans QB Young not facing penalty
Thu, 29 Jul 2010 02:26:17 PDT
Vince YoungTennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young(notes) didn't need the bad publicity, but he brought it upon himself. He threw a few punches at a strip-club employee last month in Austin, Texas, and the whole thing was captured on a security tape, which made its way onto the Internet. The employee reportedly disrespected Young's alma mater, the University of Texas.

But at least he's not going to face any kind of punishment from the league for the incident, according to the Tennessean. Multiple sources "familiar with the situation" tell the paper that Young was never really that close to being suspended.

The announcement is expected to be made sometime Thursday, the paper reports.

Five teams showed interest in Terrell Owens
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 04:28:49 PDT
Terrell OwensThe word on the street early in the NFL offseason seemed to be that wide receiver Terrell Owens(notes) was basically an unwanted man and that no team desired his services.

But ProFootballTalk reveals that five teams, including obviously the one that signed him, the Cincinnati Bengals, had some level of interest in bringing the controversial Owens onboard.

The St. Louis Rams pulled out of the running on Monday. The other three that had at least had some interest were the New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders. The latter pair "dropped out before the process got too far along," the site notes.

Haynesworth to seek out Shanahan
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 02:30:22 PDT
Albert HaynesworthWashington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes) has turned most his teammates against him this summer in his very public desire to leave the team and work out on his own rather than show up to any team-oriented activity.

But now it looks like he wants to stay, and the 29-year-old doesn't want to lose any of his $21 million bonus. ESPN Radio is reporting that Haynesworth will be getting to training camp early Wednesday to try to talk with coach Mike Shanahan and smooth things out.

The nine-year veteran spent the first seven years of his career with the Tennessee Titans before signing a seven-year, $100 million deal with Washington on the first day of free agency last year. He played 12 games with the Redskins last season. Haynesworth has lost more than 40 pounds and is "definitely in good shape," ESPN reports.

It should be interesting to see how his teammates treat him.

Bills LB Schobel 'leaning' toward returning, not retiring?
Wed, 28 Jul 2010 02:13:53 PDT
Aaron SchobelBuffalo Bills outside linebacker Aaron Schobel(notes) can't get enough of the NFL life. The two-time Pro Bowler is "leaning more toward playing" this season than he was four weeks ago when it appeared that he would be retiring, according to WKBW 7 Buffalo.

The 32-year-old, who has 483 tackles and 78 sacks since being drafted by the Bills in 2001, hasn't talked to the team in the last month but will decide what he wants to do in the next month, the station reports.

Ten days would allow Schobel to miss out on some of those grueling early practices in training camp.

Bengals expect T.O. resolution soon
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 03:02:30 PDT
Terrell OwensThe Cincinnati Bengals have made a move to sign controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens(notes) and expects a decision within 48 hours, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the St. Louis Rams decided at a coaches meeting Monday not to go after Owens, which kills a potential bidding war for his services.

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer(notes) worked out with Owens in California over the summer, and he and receiver Chad Ochocinco(notes) are lobbying Bengals brass to sign T.O., the Post-Dispatch reports.

It doesn't look like Owens will be making close to the $6.5 million he made with the Buffalo Bills last year.

Rams and No. 1 pick Bradford nearing deal
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 02:48:55 PDT
Sam BradfordThe St. Louis Rams start camp on Thursday and FOX Sports is reporting that there is a "really good chance" that No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford(notes) will be under contract by then.

The site reports that the deal for the former Oklahoma quarterback is for six years and will guarantee him between $45 million and $50 million.

In training camp, Bradford will compete with veteran A.J. Feeley(notes) for the starting quarterback position.

Rams general manager Billy Devaney is sounding pretty happy with his pick after watching him in offseason workouts: "He looks like he's unflappable," Devaney told the site. "He doesn't get too high or low. He's a smart guy. Being a great player means something to him. What really jumped out is that he's got a tremendous respect for the NFL and his peers. He doesn't put himself like the first pick in the draft."

Brady and Patriots getting closer to deal?
Mon, 26 Jul 2010 04:49:19 PDT

Tom BradyNew England Patriots quarterback and poster boy Tom Brady(notes), who has one year left on his contract, and the Patriots have been negotiating a long-term contract extension.

ESPN is reporting that a deal between Brady and the Pats could be reached this summer. ESPN sources say the "ongoing dialogue" is "positive" and that a deal is "within reach."

If a deal can't be struck, it will be primarily because of the complexity of the contract and the unknown specifics of the next NFL collective bargaining agreement, according to ESPN.

The 32-year-old five-time Pro Bowler showed up for training camp Sunday along with the rookies to start their quest for a fourth Super Bowl win during his tenure.

Favre not working on any deadline for decision to return
Wed, 21 Jul 2010 05:01:15 PDT
Brett FavreWith the Minnesota Vikings opening training camp next week, the indecisive Brett Favre(notes) still can't say if he's going to show up for the season or not. And, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, he has no deadline or timeline to make his decision.

Favre hung out with his coach, Brad Childress, on Monday in Favre's Mississippi hometown of Hattiesburg, but the pair didn't discuss when Favre would be ready to make his decision, the paper reports.

"The deadline? I don't know,'' Favre said Tuesday. "There obviously comes a point where you've probably gone too far, where you just have to move on. He hopes I make the right decision for myself — one way or the other."

Favre still wants to play in what will be his 20th season but is waiting to see how his surgically repaired left ankle feels. "After almost nine weeks, it's not where I would like it to be, but I'm working at it,'' Favre said. "Maybe it never gets to where I want it to be. Forty years old ... three surgeries ... that's all you need to know."

Well, actually, Vikings fans would like to know one more thing, Brett: Are you going to play or not?

Bengals' Benson and Goodell to meet Thursday
Wed, 21 Jul 2010 03:29:02 PDT
Cedric BensonCincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson(notes) will take a seat in NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's office Thursday to discuss his recent arrest, according to ProFootballWeekly.

The police in Austin, Texas, are saying that Benson punched a bartender outside of Annie's West in May. He was charged for the incident on June 29.

ProFootballWeekly reports that Bengals coach Marvin Lewis doesn't think Benson will get punished for the incident, but the world will likely find out sometime Thursday after meeting with Goodell.

Benson's lawyer David Cornwell explained what happened in a release: "Cedric Benson was asked to take pictures with some female fans. A man approached Cedric and objected to him posing for pictures with the women. Cedric explained that he had been asked to pose with the women and the man punched Cedric. An altercation followed and while Cedric was leaving the club, he was approached by another man aggressively. Believing this man was a friend of the man who had punched him, Cedric attempted to protect himself and continued out of the club. Immediately upon leaving the club, Cedric called the police. He was interviewed by the police and left the area."

Benson, 27, rushed for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns last year.

Seahawks not interested in Terrell Owens
Tue, 20 Jul 2010 03:29:13 PDT
Terrell OwensTerrell Owens(notes) can't catch a break. Though he has scored 144 NFL touchdowns in his career, nobody seems to want to sign him.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was on the staff of the San Francisco 49ers back in 1996 when the team drafted Owens. But Carroll isn't interested now. He told ESPN that the Seahawks aren't planning to sign Owens even if his two main receivers — T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes), 32, and Deion Branch(notes), 31 — are both coming back from offseason surgeries and are relative oldsters in the league.

"We won't be able to do that this time around," he told the site. "We're going to continue to work with the guys we've got. ... I think our situation is OK with where we are."

Mon, 19 Jul 2010 04:26:10 PDT

"Dude, im stupid excited for the season, don't hold out, you can have some of my fine fund money i set aside, let's have fun!" Ochocinco Tweeted to Revis.

Last week, Revis said that he had no idea what was going on with negotiations: "Right now, my agent is doing the talking and I haven't gotten (any) feedback from him. As of right now, I'm clueless. He's talking to those guys. Until he gives me an update on what's going on for the future, then I (don't) know."

Mon, 19 Jul 2010 04:04:13 PDT

Reggie WayneIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne(notes), who has two years left on a six-year, $39 million contract, wants to renegotiate the deal. Wayne, 31, will get paid $5.47 million this year and $5.95 million next year.

Still, he would like to be in camp on time, though he didn't show up to any voluntary offseason workouts or the team's mandatory minicamp, according to the Indianapolis Star.

"I want to be there on time but we're just going to do our part and let them do all the negotiations," he told the paper. "We done talked a little bit but it's just talk. That was it."

He may sit out camp, but it sounds like the four-time Pro Bowler isn't planning to sit out the season: "I play football. That's what I do," he told the paper. "I love the game. It goes deeper than contract talks; I like doing this. I ain't getting any younger and football is my passion."

I'm not getting any younger, but I am working hard trying to feel as best I can. Last year, I felt great. Dolphins WR Hartline may get charged for accident
Wed, 14 Jul 2010 04:24:12 PDT
Brian HartlineIt's not clear who was driving the Ford truck that slammed into a broken-down Cadillac Escalade at 4:30 in the morning on July 3 in south Florida, but one thing authorities do know is that the truck is registered to Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline(notes).

As a result, Hartline may get charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, the Miami Herald reports. The paper said the Florida Highway Patrol didn't know if there were any injuries, although a man identifying himself as Hartline's lawyer told the FHP that his client was uninjured.

Hartline hasn't spoken to the Florida Highway Patrol.

From the Miami Herald:

When an FHP trooper called Hartline's home, the [official] report said, a guest told them Hartline wasn't home and she didn't know when he would be back. The guest gave the number of Hartline's wife, Lindsay, who was in California. Troopers called and left a message on her cell phone. The person claiming to be Hartline's attorney called in response to that message.

The paper notes that damages were valued at $10,000 for the wide receiver's truck and $22,000 for the Escalade.

Eagles hanging onto Vick for now
Wed, 14 Jul 2010 03:56:13 PDT

Michael VickRumors abound about the Philadelphia Eagles being ready to send backup quarterback Michael Vick(notes) packing. But FOX Sports sources say the team would only release Vick if he forced them to do so. Meaning, FOX Sports said, it turns out Vick lied about what happened in the early morning hours of June 25, after his 30th birthday party.

Reportedly, shots were fired and one of Vick's codefendants in his dogfighting scandal was wounded moments after Vick had left the party.

FOX sources say the Eagles don't feel like sacrificing the major time and financial investment the organization has already put into Vick, whose two-year contract ends at the end of the coming season.

Other Eagles players tell FOX Sports that Vick is generally pretty quiet and well-liked by his teammates while another source said that Vick "has formed a strong relationship with new starting QB Kevin Kolb(notes)."

Vick's salary this season is $3.75 million, and he's already been paid $2.5 million of that. The rest will come due in early September if he's still on the roster.

Giants WR Smith wants more cash
Fri, 09 Jul 2010 02:55:27 PDT

Steve SmithNew York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith might only be 25 years old and in his fourth year in the league, but he's been around long enough to know that he deserves a raise, according to the New York Post

After all, the guy broke a Giants record last year when he had 107 receptions (for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns).

The Post reported that Smith, in the final year of his rookie contract, plans to be on time for training camp Aug. 1.

The Giants would like to get Smith locked up longterm but the expiring Collective Bargaining Agreement has made it difficult for extensions to be done at this point, the Post reports.

"I understand it's making it tough on both sides," Smith told The Post. "It's bad timing for me to be doing well in the National Football League."

He also said, "This is my last year. I feel like I've accomplished some good things here so I hope the people here respect that and honor that."

Titans and RB Johnson compromising?
Wed, 07 Jul 2010 04:35:16 PDT
Chris JohnsonOnly a couple of weeks ago, it seemed like 2009 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Chris Johnson and the Tennessee Titans weren't capable of figuring out a way to keep him on the squad, but now the Tennessean is reporting that the two sides may be coming to a compromise.

Running back Johnson, who gained more than 2,000 yards last season, has made it clear that he feels vastly underpaid and would like to make some bigger bucks. The paper reports, "Under the terms of the five-year, $12 million contract he signed prior to his rookie season, Johnson has reached escalators in the deal that could pay him up to an additional $2.5 million in salary in 2012. The Titans could turn that money into a signing bonus in 2010, and combine it with his scheduled base salary of $550,000 for this fall."

Johnson wouldn't get the long-term deal he wants, but he'd at least be getting some more bucks.

Chris Johnson and Titans working toward a new deal?
Tue, 06 Jul 2010 03:03:05 PDT
Chris JohnsonTennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson didn't win himself a lot of fans in the team's front office when he boycotted all of the team's offseason workouts.

He'd like a new contract, of course. After all, the NFL 2009 Offensive Player of the Year has three years left on his current contract. He recently told The Tennessean that "I can't play for $550,000. The money that I am playing for, I am getting paid less than the starting 11 (on offense) and I'm one of the lowest paid starting running backs in the league."

Now NFL.com reports that the relationship between Johnson and the team is on the mend and the two sides are working toward an agreement that will have him at camp on time in August. The Titans are clearly hoping he can repeat last season's 2,000-plus yards of rushing.
